About the Yoga

Marta's classes are grounded in the Iyengar method of Hatha Yoga, but she is aware of and respectful of other traditions, aspects of which she may integrate. This approach builds strength and endurance through holding and exploring the poses. It builds flexibility by safely and progressively opening stiff areas. It emphasizes healthy musculo-skeletal alignment, and often uses props to make this possible. Vinyassa style "jumpings," such as Sun Salutations, are often used to warm up. Her state of the art studio has an advanced rope wall system.

In classes, simple instructions are given for the poses, and the student follows the instructor's words, as if pulling him/herself along by the knots on a rope. The result is that the mind becomes single-pointed and meditative, and is concentrated in and fused with the body. This is yoga, the union of consciousness with the physical.

Eventually it is as if light flows into progressively deeper layers of the body, and the body becomes awakened and intelligent. The body is lifted to the level of the mind, and through more conscious use of the breath, the body and mind are lifted to the level of the soul. This is a deep and ongoing practice, not seeking immediate perfection, but finding perfection in the immediate.

Marta prides herself on her sequencing, which makes the poses steadily more and more accessible. She continually strives to bring to light the energetic (pranic) signature of the asanas. She speaks, as called for, on yoga philosophy and gently guides and encourages students towards meditation.

Please note that humor, gentleness and self-acceptance all have a place in these classes!

Students should refrain from eating for one hour before attending class.
